1. As the war in Israel intensifies, so does the search for House Speaker.

House Republicans must quickly agree on who will succeed Kevin McCarthy, given the unexpected escalation of violence between Hamas & Israel. The House must appoint a speaker before it can pass an emergency military aid bill for Israel. Congress also needs to pass the new spending bill in mid-November to prevent a government shut down.

After a closed door vote on Wednesday, it is expected that Louisiana Republican Steve Scalise will fill the position. His election won’t be official until a majority of members in the full House of Representatives — at least 217 — votes for him.

2. Over 1,000 civilians killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza

Gaza’s Ministry of Health announced Wednesday that Israel’s airstrikes in retaliation have killed at least 1,100 Palestinians, including 326 children. At least 5 339 additional people in Palestinian territory have been injured.

UNRWA, the United Nations’ Palestine Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, said in a statement.
