Queer Representation in Children's Books Is More Important Than Ever, Says Author Seamus Kirst



Seamus’ latest children’s book shows kids they can accept and love themselves as well as their families. Dad and Daddy’s Big, Big Family.


Dad and Daddy’s Big, Big Family Follows the story of Harper, a young girl with two fathers, and her family as they attend their first reunion. Kirst tells Sonia Baghdady about Advocate Now The book “explores the definition of a family” and celebrates “the diversity within a single family.”

Seamus Kirkst on Queer Representation in Children’s Books

Kirst’s story of LGBTQ+ families was inspired by laws passed in certain states which have tightened restrictions on the material that can be shown to children. In Florida, there is a law called “Don’t Say Gay”, which prohibits the discussion of sexual orientation in schools K-12.

Kirst stated that, “more than half of states in the United States have banned LGBTQ books.”

Kirst: “I wanted like to push back by saying, ‘okay, well this book doesn’t say gay but it just represents gay people because they exist.'”
