1. The government shutdown is looming with no end in site
Congress has only 13 days to reach an agreement about government funding. Otherwise, the government will close at the end of this month.
On Sunday, the House Republicans introduced a stopgap budget measure that included a cut of nearly 8 percent for most federal agencies as well as tighter border restrictions. The proposal excluded funding for Ukraine as well as disaster relief. It is expected that several Republicans would vote against the bill, in line with Democrats. This makes it unlikely for it to pass.
2. Dreamers uncertain after federal judge rules DACA unlawful
A federal court judge ruled on Wednesday that the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program (DACA) is illegal.
Judge Andrew Hanen of U.S. District Court for Southern District of Texas decided that the Biden Administration was not allowed to codify DACA into federal regulations, but did not order the repeal of protections against deportation and work permits for more than half a million “Dreamers.”
The Biden Administration will appeal the decision.
