1. Congress in chaos following McCarthy’s historic removal
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made history this week – though likely not in the way he wants. The House of Representatives, after Matt Gaetz, a conservative Republican Rep. filed a motion against McCarthy as Speaker of House voted on Tuesday to remove McCarthy.
The first time ever a House speaker has been removed through a vote. Patrick T. McHenry from North Carolina is the acting speaker. McHenry can only adjourn, recess, and accept speaker nominations.
2. Kaiser Permanente strike: Some tentative agreements reached
Over 75,000 Kaiser Permanente employees walked out on Wednesday, starting a strike against America’s largest nonprofit health care organization. The strike only has a three-day duration, from October 7 to 10.
The striking workers are vocational nurses, emergency room technicians, radiology techs, X-ray techs, respiratory therapists and pharmacists.
